Everything You Should Know about a Deflection Weight Indicator

Weight indicator systems are necessary process instruments used to measure the tension on the drill string in a wellbore of an oil drilling site. There’re various types of weight indicator systems for different applications. With a deflection weight indicator, the driller is interested in monitoring the weight applied to the drill bit in the hole. Let’s discuss the features of a deflection weight indicator and practical use case scenario.

Operation

Deflection weight indicator systems comprise a gauge, deadline diaphragm, c-clamp and high-pressure hose to measure weight. The c-clamp attaches the drill line to the deadline diaphragm. The deadline diaphragm converts the deflection from the drill line tension into the hydraulic pressure signal and displays the reading on the gauge. As the drill line gets tighter, more force is applied to the diaphragm, resulting in more weight displayed by the gauge.

Accuracy

Accuracy is everything when it comes to weight indicator systems and a deflection weight indicator delivers on that. It features a set of ten different dials to switch between the line size and the number of lines strung in kilograms, pounds or other units. The weight indicator has two needle pointers where one measures the weight and the other is for sensitivity.

Portability

Rig operators favor deflection weight indicators for their portability factor as they’re smaller in size compared to other weight indicator systems and thus ideal for portable use. They can be moved from one rig to another. They can also be installed near the driller or well operator for ease of view and access.

Versatility

The small size and the uses of application make a deflection weight indicator a versatile clipper weight indicator. It’s ready to use right out of the box and can be used in small drilling rigs and workover rigs. It can be mounted on various oil rigging setups, such as on a derrick or a mast. Furthermore, a deflection weight indicator comes in a steel case for easy storage, making it easier for operators to store or set it up within a few minutes.
